A TikTok user hid Apple's AirTag in his donated sneakers which ended up in another country being sold for 10 euros

Sneaker Travels: How a TikTok User’s Clever Donation Journey Led to a Bosnian Thrift Shop

Apple’s AirTags have found a variety of uses, from tracking lost luggage to helping locate stolen vehicles. But what if you could trace where your donations end up? One TikTok user did just that, offering a fascinating glimpse into the journey of his donated sneakers.

Curious about the destination of his donation, TikToker Moe.Ha placed an AirTag in a sneaker before dropping it off at a Red Cross bin in Munich. Using Apple’s Find My app, he tracked the sneaker’s unexpected journey. To his surprise, after five days, the sneakers had crossed multiple borders, landing in a thrift shop in Bosnia—800 kilometers from their starting point.

Initially, the journey seemed suspect, but it turned out to be part of the Red Cross’s donation process. The sneakers, traveling through Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia, were eventually sold for 10 euros in Bosnia. Intrigued, Moe visited the store and found the sneakers on display. He learned from an employee that they were delivered by a boss living in Germany.

The unexpected path sparked concerns of foul play, but the reality is rooted in the Red Cross’s structured sorting and distribution system. According to their process, donations are either distributed to depots and thrift shops or sold to recyclers, with profits supporting their mission.

Though this method could appear questionable to some, it aligns with the organization’s goals. Donations traveling this intricate route exemplify the global curation process. What do you think of this remarkable story? Share your thoughts in the comments.
