A recent study published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters has revealed concerning amounts of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals,” in smartwatch straps from leading brands. These substances are notorious for their persistence in the environment and human body, and they have been linked to a variety of health issues, including increased cancer risk.
The study evaluated 22 watch bands from key industry players like Apple, Samsung, Google, and Fitbit. Astonishingly, nine of these samples contained elevated levels of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), with some measurements surpassing 1,000 parts per billion—an alarming level significantly higher than that typically found in everyday consumer products.
Graham Peaslee, a co-author of the study and professor emeritus at Notre Dame, highlighted the significance of the findings due to the prolonged skin contact users have with wearable devices. While the study declined to directly name the specific manufacturers with the highest levels, it is important to note that Apple has already imposed strict guidelines, capping PFHxA levels at 25 parts per billion for the chemical and its salts, and at 1,000 parts per billion for related substances.
However, toxicology experts, including Jamie Alan from Michigan State University, pointed out that the testing methods used in the study might not accurately replicate real-world conditions. As such, the actual amount of PFHxA that might permeate human skin during everyday use could be minimal. Nonetheless, as a precautionary step to reduce exposure, the researchers recommend considering straps made from alternative materials that do not contain fluoropolymers.

To minimize potential health risks, exploring non-fluoroastomer strap options could be a wise choice.
