Tea, a popular app where women can anonymously share experiences about men they’ve dated, recently faced a significant data breach. Hackers accessed approximately 72,000 images, including 13,000 selfies and photo IDs used for account verification, along with 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages. Fortunately, no emails or phone numbers were compromised, and the breach only impacted users who signed up before February 2024.
The company has quickly responded by collaborating with third-party cybersecurity experts to bolster their systems and rectify the data vulnerabilities. They assure users that additional security measures are in place to prevent future issues.
Reports surfaced that some users on 4chan have been sharing the leaked data. Despite this setback, the Tea app has seen a surge in popularity, holding the top spot in Apple’s App Store free app rankings as of Saturday morning.
