Sea of Thieves Developers Respond to Fans with Custom Server Feature

Sea of Thieves is charting a new course as it sails into 2026. Rare, the developer behind this popular adventure, has revealed plans to introduce custom servers early next year alongside a new premium subscription model. This exciting announcement came during the inaugural Sea of Thieves Community Direct, where Rare highlighted this much-anticipated feature, which has been in the works for quite some time.

Custom servers will empower players to create their own unique experiences. Described as a “private sandbox,” gamers can use various settings to adjust loot, enemy spawn rates, or even switch off AI entirely. While the exact pricing for this premium service remains under wraps, the potential for personalized gameplay is bound to stir interest.

Responding to community requests, custom servers will also support Safer Seas Fleets. This feature allows groups of friends to occupy entire servers while retaining the same progression as the solo version of Safer Seas, making it simpler for pals to pirate together without server coordination issues.

Additionally, a new cinematic camera toolset will enable content creators to explore creative angles previously unavailable on standard servers. Rare is keen to keep Sea of Thieves enthusiasts engaged, notably after achieving an impressive milestone of 40 million lifetime players in April 2024. However, challenges persist on the PS5 platform, where a 58% drop in player base has been reported since launch.

Drew Stevens, Production Director at Rare, has been open about these hurdles. The studio’s focus for 2025 is on bolstering game security, enhancing performance, and ensuring player safety.

Rare is also planning to revamp Sea of Thieves’ seasonal content, shifting to a refined three-month season format. This update aims to better meet community expectations and adapt to the highly competitive landscape of live-service games. With these strategic changes, Sea of Thieves is poised for a potentially transformative year as it approaches its seventh anniversary.
