Samsung employees have started to apply to other companies

Samsung’s Foundry Division Struggles as Talent Exodus Sees 200 Employees Eyeing SK hynix Opportunities

Samsung’s current situation seems to be taking a downturn, particularly within its foundry business, as an increasing number of employees are considering jumping ship. Following the release of its Q3 2024 earnings forecast accompanied by an apology for subpar performance, the atmosphere is rife with negativity. The latest development indicates that a striking 200 Samsung engineers have applied for a mere three positions at SK hynix, a rival company.

SK hynix’s recruitment appears to have captured the interest of Samsung’s workforce, especially since it showcases an upper hand by securing NVIDIA as a client for its HBM memory, a pivotal component in the production of AI GPUs. The job posting was specifically for experienced etching engineers, sparking an unexpected influx of applications from Samsung. This massive response highlights a significant desire among Samsung’s engineers to explore new opportunities, possibly due to diminishing job satisfaction or career advancement prospects at their current employer.

What is even more telling is the attempt by less experienced Samsung engineers to also transfer to SK hynix, leveraging a recruitment initiative for those with under five years of experience. This suggests a broad-scale desire among Samsung employees to seek out what might be perceived as more promising or lucrative career paths.

Amidst this, a town hall meeting was held with Samsung executives and employees to address these concerns. However, the response from the head of the memory division, Lee Jung-bae, lacked significant reassurance. His advice for teams to work hard and discourage their peers from leaving did not seem to instill much confidence. With salary packages that only marginally exceed competitors when bonuses are included, there seems little to dissuade employees from considering greener pastures.

This situation illustrates the challenges Samsung faces not only in improving its financial health but also in retaining its talent and maintaining morale amidst economic pressures and competitive threats.
