Samsung Portable SSD P9 and P7 Launch With USB4, Up to 8TB Capacity, and Premium Pricing
Samsung has introduced two new high-end portable SSDs, the Samsung P9 and Samsung P7, bringing USB4 connectivity to users who need faster external storage for demanding workflows. Designed for creators, professionals, and power users, the new drives aim to deliver the kind of speed and capacity required for modern video production, large file transfers, and mobile work setups.
The standout model is the Samsung P9, a portable SSD built for professional content creation. Samsung says the P9 can support direct 12K recording, making it a serious option for filmmakers and video teams working with extremely large files on location. The drive offers sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s, placing it among the fastest portable SSDs in its class.
One of the biggest highlights is the 8TB version of the P9. Samsung claims it is the first USB4 portable SSD to reach 4,000MB/s speeds at this capacity level. That makes it especially appealing for users who need both high performance and massive storage in a compact external drive. However, this level of performance does not come cheap, with the 8TB P9 priced at $2,699.99.
The Samsung P7 takes a slightly different approach. While it also uses USB4, Samsung is positioning it more as a durable everyday portable SSD rather than a performance-first professional drive. The P7 is designed to handle rougher use, with protection against drops from up to six feet, along with shock and vibration resistance. This makes it a strong choice for photographers, students, business users, and anyone who frequently carries important data while traveling.
Both the Samsung P9 and P7 will be available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB storage options. The global release is scheduled for August 31.
Samsung P9 SSD pricing starts at $339.99 for 1TB, $649.99 for 2TB, $1,349.99 for 4TB, and $2,699.99 for 8TB.
Samsung P7 SSD pricing starts at $289.99 for 1TB, $549.99 for 2TB, $1,149.99 for 4TB, and $2,289.99 for 8TB.
The timing of the launch is notable. The memory industry is currently facing one of its tightest NAND and DRAM supply situations in years, partly due to soaring demand from AI data centers. As more memory production is directed toward enterprise and AI infrastructure, consumer storage products are facing upward pricing pressure.
Samsung has already indicated that price increases are difficult to avoid in the current market. Launching premium USB4 portable SSDs such as the P9 and P7 allows the company to focus on higher-margin products aimed at users who are willing to pay for speed, durability, and large capacity.
For professionals working with high-resolution video, the Samsung P9 could be one of the most attractive new portable SSDs of 2026. For users who prioritize toughness and reliable everyday storage, the Samsung P7 may be the more practical choice. Either way, Samsung’s latest USB4 SSD lineup shows that portable storage is moving quickly toward faster speeds, larger capacities, and more specialized use cases.
