Samsung has hinted at the possibility that it may offer paid artificial intelligence (AI) tools for its Galaxy devices starting from 2025. In the official announcement of the Galaxy S24, a footnote suggested that not all AI features will remain free, indicating that the tech giant is considering monetizing certain aspects of its AI technology.
According to reports, Samsung Mobile President, TM Roh, spoke about the potential blend of free and premium AI services. Roh emphasized that there is a diverse demand for mobile AI, with some consumers content with free features, while others might seek more powerful capabilities, even if it means paying for them.
The strategy Samsung takes moving forward could be similar to the approach used by ChatGPT, a service that offers basic functionality for free but charges users for faster response times and priority access during peak hours. Samsung is yet to determine which AI features would remain free and which would become premium.
It’s still uncertain which future AI tools might incur charges, especially since they may rely more on cloud computing for their functionality. Regardless of the decision, it’s unlikely that any changes will take place before the launch of the Galaxy S25 series.
Industry observers are keeping an eye on how Samsung will navigate this potential shift towards paid AI features. It’s expected that the company will aim to find a balance that avoids alienating users, particularly if they intend to put previously free features behind a paywall. As the development of advanced AI continues, the need to justify a paid tier becomes more critical. Samsung will have to prove that the additional cost for premium AI services brings significant value to their customers.
