The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra brought a groundbreaking experience for smartphone enthusiasts, but users encountered an unexpected hiccup: the incompatibility of Samsung’s S Pen with magnetic accessories. This dilemma, first spotlighted last year, revealed that items like the popular SaharaCase leather folio were virtually unusable with the device. Fast forward to today, it appears the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, currently priced at $1,299.99, follows the same trend, as Android Central points out.
Samsung has taken steps to warn its users, integrating a notification in their operating system. This alert informs users that magnetic accessories can disrupt the S Pen’s operations. Such interference could lead to unintended Air Actions on enabled models like the Galaxy S24 Ultra due to incorrect input registrations.
An intriguing discovery by Android Central testing indicates that not all magnetic aids are detrimental. MagSafe adapters and accessories, commonly used for seamless connectivity, don’t appear to cause issues with the S Pen’s performance. It’s worth noting, however, that the strength of the magnet might play a role in any potential interference.
From firsthand observations, the most frequently encountered problem manifests as imprecise inputs from the S Pen, worsening as it approaches the magnetic accessory.
Why is there such a clash between the S Pen and magnetic accessories? It boils down to the technology at the core of the S Pen. Utilizing Wacom’s EMR (electro-magnetic resonance) technology, the S Pen offers an exceptionally smooth, battery-free stylus experience. This cutting-edge technology uses a coil in the pen that produces an electromagnetic field, which is then sensed by a display array rather than the pen itself. This is acclaimed for giving the S Pen its low latency and precision, particularly valuable for digital artists.
However, the crux of the issue is also the magnetic nature of EMR. The S Pen’s electromagnetic field is relatively weak, meaning any external magnet – such as those used in closure mechanisms – can disrupt the pen’s functionality, rendering magnetic accessories impractical.
