Sabre Wulf Reborn: Genesis Project Unleashes a Stunning New Commodore 64 Remaster

A beloved 1984 cult classic is getting a fresh lease on life, and Commodore 64 fans have plenty to be excited about. The Genesis Project Team is putting the finishing touches on Sabre Wulf Remastered, a carefully crafted overhaul of the iconic jungle-maze adventure that aims to look, sound, and play the way many players always wished the C64 version had.

This isn’t a quick touch-up. Sabre Wulf Remastered is being rebuilt with completely redrawn pixel art designed specifically to shine on Commodore 64 hardware. Artist Jon Eggleton has reimagined the game’s sprawling 256-screen jungle using a wide range of multi-color tilesets, while upgrading the presentation to a sharper 320×200 resolution. The result is a more detailed, more vibrant world that still feels faithful to the original game’s instantly recognizable style.

Under the hood, the remaster brings meaningful technical improvements too. Developer Robert Troughton rewrote the code to help characters move more smoothly on-screen and to better match the higher refresh rate, making the action feel more responsive. He also tackled long-standing issues from the original release, including awkward screen-transition behavior, so exploration flows more naturally as you push deeper into the maze-like jungle.

Audio is getting a major upgrade as well. With music by Marcin Majdzik, the soundtrack has been refreshed to better reflect what the Commodore 64 is capable of, alongside new loading screens and cinematic touches that add modern flair without stripping away the game’s retro charm.

One of the biggest goals of the project is to finally unlock the Commodore 64’s full audiovisual potential. The original C64 port largely carried over the ZX Spectrum look, but it didn’t make the most of the C64’s strengths and often came across with a comparatively muted palette. This remaster corrects that with bolder, more lively color work that makes the jungle environments pop.

There are also smart quality-of-life improvements designed for today’s players. Expect a new “fog of war” map to help with navigation, an enhanced user interface, and expanded enemy variety that adds extra texture to the moment-to-moment challenge. These additions keep the core loop intact while making the overall experience easier to read and more enjoyable to play.

For anyone unfamiliar with the original, Sabre Wulf first launched in 1984 from British developer Ultimate Play the Game, appearing on platforms including the Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, and Amstrad CPC. Players take control of Sabreman as he fights through a vibrant jungle labyrinth, chasing down treasures stolen by the blue Wolf. Its maze-like structure, distinctive visuals, and memorable atmosphere helped it earn a lasting reputation among retro game fans.

The latest preview build suggests Sabre Wulf Remastered is now nearing completion, though there’s still no confirmed release date. An early v0.5 build is already available for those eager to see how the project is shaping up and to experience this Commodore 64 remaster in progress.
