Rumors Swirl Around New Valve Steam Device Featuring AMD RDNA 4 Graphics

Conflicting reports have recently emerged regarding Valve’s upcoming Steam hardware, potentially featuring AMD components. The discourse began when prominent voices like eXtas1s and HandleDeck shared insights, which Liam Dawe from GamingOnLinux quickly disputed. Dawe asserts that Valve has long been updating AMD Mesa graphics drivers to maintain compatibility with Linux across both existing and future AMD technologies.

Dawe argues that eXtas1s and HandleDeck may have misunderstood recent driver updates, with speculation possibly influenced by earlier rumors surrounding Valve’s alleged ‘Fremont’ project, which is said to be based on the AMD Lilac platform. To back up his perspective, Dawe points to comments from a senior member of Valve’s Linux graphics driver team. This expert noted that while initial support for AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture is solid, certain features like cooperative matrix and video decoding/encoding are not yet fully integrated due to time constraints. These will see further development potentially finalized during the release candidate period.

In essence, Dawe suggests that the current rumors hold as much weight as the previous whispers about an AMD Ryzen Z2 update for the Steam Deck, which were debunked by Pierre-Loup Griffais, a key designer of the Steam Deck. While the future of new Steam hardware remains uncertain, inventive third-party developers have successfully transformed the existing Steam Deck into a makeshift home console, showcasing the device’s versatility and continued appeal.
