Game console emulation on mobile devices is experiencing a surge in popularity, largely due to the increasing availability of Android-powered gaming handhelds on the market. Even iOS has jumped on the bandwagon, with Apple now permitting emulators on its App Store. While classic consoles like the PSP are already within reach for emulation on both platforms, PlayStation 3 emulation is still on the horizon. However, it might just be arriving sooner than expected.
A surprising development emerged last week when the founder of RPCS3, a well-known PS3 emulator for PCs, revealed an alpha version for Android. This came as a surprise, especially since the team had announced less than three months ago that the mobile version wouldn’t be making its debut anytime soon due to community challenges. However, in a turn of events, they have made significant progress.
It’s essential to note that this early version of the Android PS3 emulator is still in its nascent stages. Many games may not launch properly, and those that do may experience glitches or performance issues. Additionally, the emulator currently lacks built-in controls, necessitating the use of external controllers, such as the Razer Kishi.
Despite these early limitations, the progress is impressive, particularly as it was only late last year when hopes for RPCS3 on iOS and Android seemed dim. The key to this development was the release of an ARM-compatible version of the PS3 emulator in December.
While the founder, known as DH, has not officially announced the Android port of RPCS3, the alpha version is available for download on their official GitHub page. This marks an exciting step forward for mobile gaming enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the chance to play PS3 games on their smartphones.
