NVIDIA Driver Bug Workaround Reportedly Boosts RPCS3 Performance by Up to 37% and Cuts VRAM Use

RPCS3 players using NVIDIA graphics cards may soon see a noticeable jump in performance, thanks to a newly discovered workaround for what the emulator’s development team describes as an NVIDIA driver-related bottleneck.

According to the RPCS3 team, the issue has been affecting the PlayStation 3 emulator on systems equipped with NVIDIA GPUs, causing lower frame rates and higher VRAM consumption in many games. The bug reportedly does not affect AMD GPU drivers, which is why AMD-based systems are not expected to see the same gains from this workaround.

A contributor known as Yahfz is credited with finding a fix that helps bypass the driver problem. Early testing suggests the results can be significant, with some RPCS3 games showing performance improvements between 10% and 37%, depending on the hardware configuration and the game being tested.

In one test scenario, Red Dead Redemption reportedly gained around 25% more FPS on a high-end system using a Ryzen 9800X3D and an RTX 5090. Another setup featuring an Intel Core i9-13900K and RTX 3080 saw roughly a 20% performance increase in the same boat test scenario.

The benefits are not limited to newer RTX graphics cards. Older NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPUs also appear to gain from the workaround. The RPCS3 team tested an older laptop equipped with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ and GTX 1060, where Saints Row IV saw an improvement of around 20%. Saints Row: The Third also improved by approximately 10% on the same system.

Gran Turismo 5 showed some of the biggest gains reported so far. In an open-road test using a Ryzen 7 9850X3D paired with an RTX 3070, performance increased from 107 FPS to 147 FPS, representing a 37% boost. Even more notable, VRAM usage dropped from 7.1 GB to 4.8 GB, a reduction of about 32%.

Another Gran Turismo 5 test, using an Intel Core i9-12900K with an RTX 5070, showed a smaller but still meaningful jump from 60 FPS to 67 FPS, or around 12% higher performance.

While these early numbers are promising, the RPCS3 developers caution that results will vary. Performance gains depend on the game, the specific scene being tested, the CPU, the GPU, and overall system configuration. Some games may see major improvements, while others may only gain a modest boost.

This workaround is especially important for RPCS3 because emulation can be extremely demanding on both CPU and GPU resources. A driver-level bottleneck can prevent even powerful gaming PCs from reaching their expected performance, particularly in complex PlayStation 3 titles that already push the emulator hard.

The development team also said it has attempted to report the driver bug through NVIDIA’s available developer channels but has struggled to establish direct communication. The team is encouraging NVIDIA to open a clearer line of contact for emulator developers and independent software vendors so driver issues like this can be reported and resolved more efficiently.

For RPCS3 users with NVIDIA graphics cards, this update could be one of the more meaningful performance improvements in recent memory. Higher FPS, reduced VRAM usage, and better behavior on both new and older GPUs could make many PlayStation 3 games smoother and more playable once the workaround becomes widely available.
