Rising Stars: Exploring the New Wave of Chatbots

OpenAI’s ChatGPT continues to reign as the world’s most popular chatbot, but competitors are making significant strides, according to analytics from Similarweb and Sensor Tower. These data-driven insights reveal that other chatbots like Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot have seen promising increases in user engagement. For instance, Gemini experienced a 7.4% rise in global web traffic, reaching an average of 10.9 million daily visits in March, while Copilot saw a 2.1% uptick to 2.4 million daily visits.

Similarweb also highlighted impressive growth for Anthropic’s Claude and DeepSeek’s AI lab chatbot. In March, Claude achieved 3.3 million average daily visits, whereas DeepSeek saw a remarkable 16.5 million visits. Interestingly, xAI’s Grok, which only launched its web app recently, matched DeepSeek’s daily visit numbers, despite the competition’s drop in traffic by 25% since February.

While these numbers remain dwarfed by ChatGPT’s monumental milestone of over 500 million weekly active users, the race for the second place is heating up. Notably, Grok from Elon Musk’s xAI is witnessing significant momentum, boasting a staggering 800% month-over-month increase in traffic.

In the mobile sphere, chatbot apps are experiencing a surge, possibly driven by recent advancements in AI models. Sensor Tower data indicates that Claude’s app enjoyed a 21% week-over-week bump in user engagement following the release of Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Similarly, the launch of Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash model sparked a 42% rise in their app’s weekly active users.

New features are drawing users as well. Google introduced a “canvas” feature for Gemini that previews coding project outputs, and Anthropic enhanced its Claude client with additional tools. These developments, combined with diverse use cases and heightened consumer interest, are driving growth in the AI chatbot ecosystem.

Despite these gains by competitors, OpenAI likely remains unconcerned. According to Sensor Tower’s insights, ChatGPT boasts ten times more mobile app weekly active users than Gemini and Claude combined as of March. This dominance underscores its continued leadership in the increasingly crowded AI chatbot market.
