Revolutionary Stretchable LCD Display Prototype by LG with Enhanced Micro-LED Lighting Capabilities

Prepare to be wowed by LG Display’s latest groundbreaking development in the world of screen technology! They’re unveiling the world’s first stretchable display, a marvel of innovation that can expand by an impressive 50%. This pioneering technology was presented at a notable event in Seoul, gathering over 100 prominent figures from South Korea’s industry, academia, and research sectors.

What makes these stretchable displays so remarkable is their flexibility. They can be stretched, folded, and twisted into any form you can imagine. The prototype boasts a 12-inch screen capable of expanding to 18 inches without compromising on quality, offering a crystal-clear resolution of 100ppi and full RGB color display.

Since the first prototype in 2022, the maximum elongation rate has leaped from 20% to 50%. Such advancements pave the way for an array of innovative designs and increase the technology’s commercial potential. The secret behind this achievement lies in the use of advanced materials and new wiring designs, which have significantly boosted the panel’s versatility and resilience.

The inclusion of a micro-LED light source up to 40 micrometers in size contributes to its incredible durability, allowing it to endure extreme environments and to be stretched and reshaped more than 10,000 times without losing image quality. This makes them perfect candidates for applications in industries from fashion and wearables to mobility.

Envision the endless possibilities: from automotive panels that transform shapes to wearables delivering real-time data directly on a firefighting uniform. LG Display, chosen to lead this national project back in 2020, has collaborated with 19 other domestic industry and research institutes, working under the guidance of South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The successful completion of this project doesn’t just push forward the boundaries of display technology; it also enhances local capabilities in materials, components, and R&D infrastructure. This achievement solidifies LG Display’s role in setting the pace for future displays globally.

Soo-young Yoon, LG Display’s CTO, emphasizes that the future of display technology will flourish through cohesive collaboration between industry leaders, academia, and research experts. With a wide array of manufacturing facilities and about 70,707 employees worldwide, LG Display continues to play a pivotal role in the display technology sector, crafting innovative solutions for televisions, computers, automobiles, and much more.
