Leapmotor D19 debuts as the first SUV with a built-in oxygen generator, aiming squarely at the Tesla Model Y L with a lower expected price and a richer tech package. The new flagship from Leapmotor—one of China’s fastest-rising new energy vehicle brands—arrives as a showcase of how fiercely competitive the country’s EV market has become.
Backed by a 20% stake from Stellantis, Leapmotor nearly doubled its year-over-year sales in the first half of 2025 and led the sales charts among new energy startups. The D19 is positioned to push that momentum further with a blend of performance, cabin innovation, and standout features you won’t find elsewhere.
Buyers can choose between two powertrains. There’s a pure electric version featuring a substantial 115 kWh hybrid LFP/nickel battery pack, designed for long-distance confidence. For maximum flexibility, the extended-range version pairs an 80 kWh battery with an efficient gasoline generator, easing range anxiety on road trips and in regions with sparse charging infrastructure. Charging speeds are billed as significantly faster than the Tesla Model Y L, reinforcing the D19’s long-haul credentials.
Inside, the D19 leans hard into high-end tech. Dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chips deliver a claimed 1,280 TOPS of AI computing to power an advanced cabin interface and support autonomous driving features, while a sweeping 60-inch AR head-up display projects critical information across the driver’s field of view. A bold, spacious interior layout rounds out the premium feel.
Its headline feature, however, is something completely different: an on-board oxygen generator. This is the first time an SUV—electric or otherwise—offers this capability from the factory. The system can produce up to 8 liters of oxygen per hour, allowing occupants to enrich cabin air during high-altitude journeys. That’s a meaningful advantage for families heading into the mountains or traversing destinations such as the Tibetan Plateau, where the average elevation is roughly 4,500 meters and altitude sickness is common among unacclimatized travelers. Much like the oxygen-enrichment systems used on high-altitude trains that can raise cabin oxygen content to about 23%, the D19 lets you bring a similar comfort feature along for the ride.
Despite its premium positioning, the D19 is expected to undercut the six-seat Tesla Model Y L’s price by around 10%. Combined with its rapid charging, advanced AI hardware, expansive AR HUD, and unique oxygen generator, the D19 presents a compelling value proposition for drivers who want cutting-edge tech without premium pricing.
In a market crowded with hundreds of EV models, standing out takes more than just range or acceleration. Leapmotor’s D19 shows how automakers in China are pushing boundaries—pairing high-performance electric platforms with distinctive, real-world features designed to make road trips safer, more comfortable, and a lot more interesting.
