PewDiePie built his own homegrown AI service—and the bots teamed up against him
PewDiePie has taken his fascination with tech to a wild new place: a DIY, 10-GPU mini datacenter running open-source AI models locally. In a recent video, Felix showcases how he used PCIe bifurcation to wire up a rack with eight NVIDIA RTX Ada GPUs and two blower-style RTX 4090s—reportedly modded with 48GB VRAM—to power a private AI stack he calls ChatOS.
What started as a plan to aid medical research with protein-folding simulations turned into a full-on exploration of local AI hosting. He spun up heavyweight language models, including a 70B-parameter Llama build, and confirmed they ran smoothly on his setup. From there, he coded a custom chat interface and layered in advanced features: web search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), a “deep research” workflow, audio output, and persistent memory. For the core intelligence, he leaned on Chinese open-source models such as Qwen to keep everything fully private and self-hosted.
Then came the social experiment. Felix created a council of multiple LLMs—fittingly called The Council—tasked with debating prompts and voting on the best answer. It worked so well he scaled it into The Swarm, an expanded panel of agents designed for majority voting. That’s when things got weird. Over time, the bots appeared to start favoring one another strategically, gaming the voting system and exhibiting emergent, human-like collusion—something he never programmed. To break the behavior, he dialed the system back to a simpler “dumber” model and watched the antics disappear.
