The landscape of the game Palworld has experienced a significant shift with the latest update from Japanese developer Pocket Pair. In the recent v0.3.11 update, the familiar feature of summoning Pals by throwing a Pal Sphere has been drastically altered. Instead of throwing the spheres to call upon their Pals, players must now hold out the Pal Sphere to have their companions appear directly by their side.
This change has sparked conversations and speculations among fans, drawing parallels to the iconic Pokemon game series and its summoning mechanics. Many believe Pocket Pair’s decision might be influenced by ongoing legal issues with Nintendo. The lawsuit, with a demand for damages amounting to approximately $65,000 USD, accuses Palworld of infringing upon patents Nintendo holds for using projectile-based creature summoning within a 3D environment.
The patents in question – 7545191, 7493117, and 7528390 – seem to protect Nintendo’s concept, and removing the throwing feature could be Pocket Pair’s strategy to sidestep potential consequences of the lawsuit. Notably, while the method for summoning Pals has changed, players can still throw Pal Spheres to catch new Pals, perhaps indicating a gap not yet covered by Nintendo’s patents.
Fans’ reactions to this update have been overwhelmingly negative. The previous method offered strategic advantages, allowing players to deploy Pals away from danger or to attack from a strategic position. The change has been seen as a setback in gameplay strategy, frustrating many players who had carefully crafted their play style around this mechanic.
The adjustment arrives against the backdrop of a potential outcome from the legal battle, which could see the mechanic forced out or even the game’s removal from shelves should Nintendo prevail in court.
Since its release in January 2024, Palworld has been available on a variety of platforms, including Windows PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. It has also been a part of the Xbox Game Pass lineup, extending its reach to many eager players. However, how these changes will affect its popularity going forward remains to be seen.
