Smart ring creator Oura has announced the introduction of an innovative section within its mobile app, known as Oura Labs, designed specifically for beta testing new features with the aid of user feedback to enhance product development. This exciting update, presently exclusive to iOS users, brings the debut of the Symptom Radar feature, which supports health monitoring by tracking various physiological strain markers.
The primary role of Symptom Radar is to monitor biometric readings like body temperature fluctuations, respiratory rate, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. With these metrics, the feature aims to detect and alert users to any abrupt changes in their health status. It accomplishes this by delivering notifications linked to the user’s Readiness Score, signaling any variations in symptoms that might suggest it is time to take a break and recuperate.
Notably, the notifications provided by Symptom Radar are designed to be distinct and detailed, unlike the generic prompts from the app’s rest mode. It is important to mention, Oura emphasizes that while valuable for monitoring health patterns, Symptom Radar should not be used as a medical diagnostic tool and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
Shyamal Patel, the Head of Science at Oura, explained that their Research and Development team has a tradition of internally releasing features for testing purposes. He shared, “Oura Labs is our approach to extending the internal engagement for new features with our users in a structured and formal manner. It’s a space within the app where users can explore and interact with the fresh concepts we’re working on. Oura Labs will provide users with a glimpse into a variety of early-stage ideas.”
The company has made the process of opting into and out of Oura Labs straightforward, encouraging user participation and feedback. This direct feedback mechanism not only allows users to share their thoughts on the experimental features but also to contribute to the overall improvement of the product.
Recently, Oura has expanded its market presence by launching its rings for sale on Amazon. This follows their availability on BestBuy.com in April 2023, signaling the company’s commitment to making their technology more readily accessible to a wider audience.
As Oura continues to innovate in the smart wearable industry, Oura Labs represents an essential step towards fostering a collaborative environment between the company and its user base, allowing for real-world testing and refinements that could lead to more personalized and effective health tracking solutions.
