Excitement is building in the tech community as the first performance benchmarks for NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5070 have surfaced, showcasing an impressive leap forward. This new member of the RTX 50 “Blackwell” series is poised to deliver a notable 20% performance boost over its predecessor, the RTX 4070, especially evident in Vulkan tests. Slated for a retail launch on March 5th, the RTX 5070 is priced at $549, offering gamers a bit more bang for their buck compared to when the RTX 4070 first hit the market.
Powering this mid-range marvel is the Blackwell GB205 chip, which is expected to alleviate the stock shortages seen in previous launches. While speculation around the missing ROPS affecting higher-end models persists, the RTX 5070 is unlikely to be affected. Nevertheless, enthusiasts are eager to see if it lives up to its potential.
The early numbers, gathered from Geekbench, show the RTX 5070 scoring 187,414 in the OpenCL test and 188,712 in the Vulkan test. These figures represent a clear edge over the RTX 4070, which scored 167,924 and 156,601, respectively. While these synthetic benchmarks provide a glimpse, they aren’t definitive indicators of real-world gaming performance, which leaves much to anticipation.
When compared to the RTX 4070 Ti, the RTX 5070 shows comparable Vulkan performance but trails in OpenCL scores. The 4070 Ti has a slight advantage due to its additional VRAM, a factor to consider for enthusiasts who aim for performance without compromise. However, the RTX 5070 might find itself wedged more competitively between the 4070 Ti and the 4070 Ti SUPER, rather than reaching the heights of the RTX 4090, a ceiling only broken with next-gen features like DLSS 4.
As NVIDIA rolls out this new contender, it faces stiff competition from AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 series, which is expected to offer robust performance at a tempting price point. NVIDIA may have to leverage its software advantages and possibly sweeten the deal with game bundles to stay ahead in the market.
