Graphics enthusiasts have a new contender in the high-performance segment—the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition. Outfitted with the fully expanded AD103 graphics chip, this card offers slightly better performance compared to its predecessor, the GeForce RTX 4080. Even when matched against an overclocked RTX 4080 variant, the RTX 4080 Super can hold its own, offering improved performance at the same price point—an outcome that might be influenced by the market competition, especially after AMD’s recent price reductions of their top models, which have put them in a similar price bracket. Additionally, AMD currently has the upper hand with more installed VRAM. The competition could shape future offerings, though it’s only speculative at this stage.
The performance limitation due to insufficient VRAM became apparent with the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti, highlighting the importance of balancing power and capacity. Despite being part of the same series, the Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 Super Trinity Black Edition excels in gaming performance. It includes subtle RGB lighting integrated into its cooler design without being flashy. While the overall craftsmanship can be polished further, particularly internal cables for fans and RGB lighting, which can slightly mar the visual aesthetic. Moreover, the plastic fan cover doesn’t seem to match the quality suggested by the metallic backplate.
Despite minor construction critiques, the card presents itself as a stylish component in any PC build, with its curved design helping it to stand out. In terms of stability and performance, Zotac’s offering is commendable, at times surpassing the likes of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, especially if ray tracing is a priority for the user. At the retail price of $1,399, the card is definitely not in the budget category. Savvy consumers might consider waiting to see if the price of the standard RTX 4080 drops close to the $1,000 mark following the Super variant’s release, which would make the original model more appealing. However, the future market price trends for the new graphics card remain uncertain post-launch.
