Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks Records as Japan’s Quickest-Selling Console, Surpassing PS2 and Game Boy Advance

The Nintendo Switch 2 is making waves in Japan, setting new records and capturing the attention of the gaming world. Reports show the console sold an astonishing 1,538,260 units in its first month, marking it as the fastest-selling console in Japan since sales tracking began in 1996.

This impressive feat places it ahead of the Game Boy Advance, which sold 1,367,433 units in its first month in 2001, and the PlayStation 2, which moved 1,134,862 units in 2000. Dr. Serkan Toto from Kantan Games highlighted that these figures don’t even include sales from Nintendo’s own store, suggesting the total could be significantly higher.

The Switch 2’s launch has become a cultural sensation in Japan, a testament to Nintendo’s unyielding stronghold in the gaming market. For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold 556,633 units in its first month back in 2017. The Switch 2 is currently selling three times faster than its predecessor.

Famitsu’s sales charts further report that the Switch 2 sold 947,931 units in Japan within the first four days alone. This incredible achievement also sees it outperforming other legendary consoles like the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2. It’s important to note that the Switch 2 is significantly subsidized in Japan, retailing at 50,000 yen (approximately $334), compared to the global price tag of $450 or more.

Globally, the Nintendo Switch 2 reached a staggering 3.5 million units sold in just four days, making it the fastest-selling system ever and setting the stage for the largest console launch in gaming history. The console is on track to potentially surpass 15 million units worldwide by the end of 2025, far exceeding the debut year of the original Switch and casting a long shadow over the PlayStation 4 and 5’s first-year sales.

The big question now is whether the Switch 2 can keep up this momentum through the holiday season or if sales will moderate as the year progresses.
