Nikon Z 50 II Leak Hints at Sleek New Design with Few Hardware Upgrades

The Nikon Z 50, first released in 2019, was not particularly groundbreaking at its debut and has since lagged behind emerging competitors like Fujifilm and Sony. These rivals have introduced impressive features such as 5-axis image stabilization in cameras priced around $1,000. A recent leak, however, suggests that Nikon plans to refresh the Z 50 with a Z 50 II model.

The Z 50 II is rumored to come with three significant upgrades. Firstly, it will likely receive an ergonomic and aesthetic update to match the Z 6 III, potentially including features like a two-axis Vari-angle touchscreen and a smaller EVF tower. Secondly, the camera is expected to incorporate the Expeed 7 processor, which could result in faster write speeds, improved autofocus tracking and subject recognition, and possibly support higher video frame rates and resolutions. Finally, the Z 50 II is anticipated to be updated to USB Type-C connectivity.

Noticeably absent from the leak is any mention of in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The Z 50 II seems poised to use the same 21 MP DX-format APS-C sensor as its predecessor, making the inclusion of IBIS unlikely. This omission could be a significant drawback, especially when compared to other entry-level and mid-range cameras like the Sony A6700 and Fujifilm X-S20. These competitors, priced slightly higher than the current Nikon Z 50, come equipped with excellent in-body image stabilization.

While the new Nikon APS-C camera is expected to launch later this year, the information about the Z 50 II is still in the early stages of rumors and leaks.
