Square Enix has been honoring its classic Final Fantasy games, but one title remains elusive—a remake of Final Fantasy 9. Despite no official announcement, recent developments suggest this dream might still come true. A new Zidane collectible figure, coupled with a magazine feature, hints that the project may not be entirely off the table.
During Square Enix’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, fans noticed Final Fantasy 9 gaining attention. Famitsu, a well-known publication, showcased the RPG on its cover. The redesigned figure of Zidane adds to the speculation, indicating that a remake might still be in the works.
Noted insider NateTheHate2 had warned that the project faced cancellation threats just before the July 7th anniversary. Yet, Square Enix appears focused on its beloved classics, hinting at possible future developments.
A new addition to the Play Arts Shin series, the Zidane figure, introduces variations from previous versions, allowing for customization with different poses, weapons, and accessories. This reimagined character also graces Famitsu’s cover with artwork that accompanies an 18-page article featuring interviews with the original creators. The phrase “Once more, to the place of memories” in the magazine sparks further hope that a remake isn’t off the table.
There’s a chance the character redesign was planned before any potential cancellation. In 2021, an Nvidia GeForce Now leak listed the game among others that largely became reality. NateTheHate2 mentioned the title was in development despite some challenges.
Major gaming events have come and gone without any mention of the remake. However, there is still hope that upcoming events like Gamescom on August 20th or the Tokyo Game Show in September could finally deliver the announcement fans have been waiting for.
