The future of Apple’s iPad Pro line looks bright as the tech giant is expected to introduce OLED screens to its tablets, with Samsung stepping up as a key supplier. Apple, already utilizing Samsung’s OLED screens for the iPhone and Apple Watch, appears to be deepening this partnership. The upcoming iPads will mark the first time OLED technology is used in Apple’s tablets, bringing enhanced visuals to the iPad experience.
OLED Panel Supply Shared Between Samsung and LG for Upcoming iPad Pro Models
As per reports, Samsung Display and LG Display will split orders for the new iPad Pro models. It’s been discussed that Samsung Display will be responsible for the 11-inch OLED panels for the new generation of 11-inch iPad Pros. On the other hand, LG Display is expected to supply OLED panels for the larger, next-generation 13-inch iPad Pro. Yet, there’s a chance that Samsung Display could begin providing OLED panels for the 13-inch model later in the year.
The shipping forecasts suggest that Samsung Display will be handling around 4 million OLED panels, with LG Display shipping 5 million units for the forthcoming iPad Pros.
The cost of OLED panels for these high-end devices is considerably higher than those used in smartphones; OLED screens for the 11-inch iPad Pro are estimated to be in the $280 to $290 range, while the 13-inch variant could command a price between $380 to $390. The reason for the higher prices stems from the larger sizes and the adoption of a novel tandem OLED technology. This approach involves stacking two layers of OLED, considerably boosting panel brightness and durability. LG Display’s tandem structure OLED panel also claims to extend the life span fourfold and enhances efficiency by a factor of 1.5 to 2, compared to single-layer OLED panels.
Due to the increased cost of this advanced display technology, the prices of the new iPad Pro line are anticipated to rise. Market predictions suggest that the next-generation 11-inch iPad Pros may carry a $100 to $150 premium over the current models. Similarly, the new 13-inch iPad Pro model, anticipated for release this year with the OLED screen, could see a $150 to $200 price increase compared to the existing 13-inch units with Mini-LED screens.
With the integration of OLED technology, future iPad Pros are expected to offer a significantly enhanced viewing experience, which could justify the speculated increase in price. As Apple continues to innovate within its product lines, customers can look forward to devices that offer even better performance, display quality, and overall user experience.
