To get a pulse on their preferences, we collaborated with the app intelligence firm Appfigures, which offered insights into the 50 most downloaded apps by this vibrant demographic.
While privacy rules restricted access to data for users aged 13 to 17, we delved into trends among those aged 18 to 24. The insights, though centered on the U.S. market, shed light on the app habits of older Gen Z individuals.
From January to October, one app that gathered significant attention was Temu, a bustling online marketplace wooing users with its vast array of discounted products. With 41.98 million downloads among young adults, Temu’s gamification elements like coupons and rewards seem to be hitting the mark, even against the backdrop of sustainability debates. Meanwhile, competitor Shein recorded 14.68 million downloads, possibly indicating a saturation point for new users in this age bracket.
TikTok continues its unstoppable rise, coming in second after Temu with 33.23 million downloads. Its role as a go-to platform for quick, entertaining content and even as a preferred search engine over Google, underscores its pivotal place in Gen Z’s digital lives. YouTube also enjoys popularity, gaining 14.03 million installations throughout the year.
The short drama app industry is seeing a surge, led by ShortMax which captivated Gen Z with its diverse selection of short films. Over 10 million downloads this year point to a growing appetite for succinct storytelling.
In the realm of social media, Meta’s suite of apps dominates. Threads, the newest addition, leads with 32.32 million downloads, while stalwarts like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger follow closely. Interestingly, Facebook’s revamped design is drawing renewed interest from this demographic.
Google remains a titan with 17.65 million downloads for its search app, and significant numbers for Chrome, Meet, Drive, and Photos.
AI-powered apps are also making waves. OpenAI’s ChatGPT captured the interest of young adults with 24.63 million downloads, serving as a vital tool for education and career guidance. Meanwhile, ByteDance introduced Gauth, securing 8.37 million downloads, making it a rising star among educational applications.
Gen Z’s love for sharing moments made byte-sized entertainment platforms like CapCut soar, with 21.72 million downloads, thanks to its intuitive editing capabilities for apps like TikTok. Lemon8 is also carving out space with 7.7 million users.
In the world of streaming, Netflix reigns supreme, drawing 15.67 million downloads, while Prime Video and Disney+ closely trail. Traditional media isn’t left in the dust, with platforms like Max, Peacock, and Tubi finding sizeable audiences.
Spotify, with its lineup of playlists and podcasts, has carved out a cherished spot, boasting 10.45 million downloads.
On the financial front, apps making transactions effortless have also gained traction. PayPal leads with 13.92 million new downloads, while Venmo and Cash App attract significant young adult users for seamless monetary exchanges.
