Minisforum N5 Air-7640 Goes on Sale as an Affordable AMD NAS With Up to 174TB Storage Support
The Minisforum N5 Air-7640 is now officially available to buy, giving home lab users, small businesses, and media server enthusiasts a new AMD-powered NAS option with serious expansion potential. First introduced in September 2026, the system is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the higher-end N5 Air model, while still offering strong storage capacity, modern connectivity, and upgrade-friendly hardware.
Pricing for the Minisforum N5 Air-7640 starts at $495. However, that entry-level version is a barebones configuration, meaning it does not include memory or storage. Buyers who want a more ready-to-use setup can choose the $679 configuration, which includes 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 64GB of storage for the operating system.
At the heart of the N5 Air-7640 is the AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS, a mid-range processor from AMD’s Phoenix Point family. It comes with Radeon 760M integrated graphics, making it suitable for general NAS duties, media management, file serving, backups, and lightweight server workloads. While the built-in GPU and AI hardware are not the main selling points, the system leaves room for expansion with a native PCIe x16 slot.
That expansion slot does come with one important limitation: it runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 speeds rather than full x16 bandwidth. Even so, it still gives users flexibility for internal upgrades, depending on their needs. Minisforum has also included an OCuLink port, which adds another option for high-speed external expansion.
Storage is the biggest highlight of the Minisforum N5 Air-7640. The compact NAS is rated for up to 174TB of total storage capacity, making it a compelling choice for anyone building a large personal cloud, media library, backup server, or small office storage system. The chassis includes five HDD bays and three M.2 slots, allowing users to mix high-capacity hard drives with fast SSD storage.
Connectivity is another strong point. The N5 Air-7640 includes both 10GbE and 5GbE wired networking, giving it the bandwidth needed for fast file transfers, multi-user access, and demanding NAS workloads. There are also two USB4 ports, which can be used to expand the system further with compatible external devices.
The NAS also supports up to 96GB of DDR5 memory, making it more flexible for users who want to run virtual machines, containers, media services, or more advanced network storage software. A dual-fan cooling system is included to help manage temperatures, while the overall design keeps the device sleek enough for a desktop, office, or home server setup.
With its AMD Ryzen processor, large storage ceiling, multiple drive bays, fast networking, USB4, OCuLink, and memory upgrade support, the Minisforum N5 Air-7640 stands out as an affordable yet capable NAS for users who want more than a basic storage box. For $495 in barebones form, it offers a strong foundation for a custom high-capacity network storage build.
