Microsoft has unveiled an intriguing new feature for its Edge browser on both Windows and Mac: Copilot Mode. This experimental addition integrates AI directly into your browsing experience, offering a new level of online interaction. When opening a new tab, users are greeted with a prompt to engage with the AI, which is designed to assist with a variety of tasks by accessing the web on your behalf.
The AI in Copilot Mode comes with five distinct functionalities: Search and Chat, Ask Copilot, Think Deeper, Research, and Action. Each serves a unique purpose, from providing quick answers to delving into deeper research and even undertaking actions online. Currently, these features are available for free, but require a Microsoft account login, and access could change over time.
Similar to other AI tools like ChatGPT, the Ask, Think, and Research modes allow users to input prompts, which the AI then uses to search the internet for answers. What’s particularly innovative about the Search and Chat function is its ability to review every open tab in Edge and offer relevant insights. Imagine browsing for swimsuits and then consulting the AI for its opinion on your selections.
In Action mode, Copilot acts as a virtual personal assistant, actively engaging with websites and collecting data. Users can watch the AI operating in a simulated browsing environment and step in whenever needed. It’s important to note, however, that Copilot logs screenshots of every step taken in Action mode and records data from interactions. Future updates might allow the AI to access more personal data, raising privacy considerations.
Despite its potential, the AI does have limitations. During trial runs, it struggled with straightforward tasks like finding flights within a date range and demonstrated slow performance. Since it’s still experimental, issues such as unauthorized purchases might arise, and liability in such cases remains unclear.
To mitigate privacy concerns, Microsoft assures adherence to data privacy protocols, although online personal data is always subject to risks. Readers wary of AI mishaps can consider alternatives like using sandboxed web browsers without AI or opting for Linux-based systems instead of Windows for enhanced security.
