Metro Redux Gets a Free 4K and 120fps Upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
The tunnels of post-apocalyptic Moscow are darker, sharper, and smoother than ever. Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux have received a free next-generation upgrade, bringing major visual and performance improvements to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players.
Released on October 29 for modern consoles, the update gives both Metro Redux games a significant technical boost. Players can now experience the survival shooters in native 4K at 60 frames per second, or upscaled 4K at up to 120fps on supported displays. For fans returning to Artyom’s brutal journey through the Moscow Metro, this makes the haunting underground world feel more immersive and responsive.
The upgrade is not just about resolution and frame rate. Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux now feature improved textures, enhanced lighting, better shadows, smoother animations, and richer environmental detail. The result is a cleaner, more atmospheric version of the already intense post-apocalyptic experience, while still preserving the claustrophobic tension that made the series stand out.
There are also several platform-specific enhancements. PlayStation 5 Pro owners can take advantage of PSSR upscaling for improved image quality. On Xbox, the update adds Play Anywhere support, Impulse Trigger feedback, and optimizations for ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices.
PC players received their own update earlier, on October 22. That version added support for DLSS, spatial audio, and uncapped frame rates, giving players more flexibility depending on their hardware setup.
However, Xbox and Microsoft Store players should be aware of one important issue before upgrading. Existing save files from the Microsoft Store version will not carry over to the upgraded release. Players will need to start a new game or use chapter select. All chapters are unlocked, but choosing a chapter means starting with a default equipment loadout instead of continuing with previously collected gear.
This free Metro Redux upgrade arrives at a perfect time for fans of the series. With Metro 2039 scheduled for release on February 4, 2027, the enhanced versions of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux offer a strong reason to revisit Artyom’s earlier adventures or discover them for the first time.
The Moscow Metro may be more visually impressive now, but survival is still unforgiving. Keep your weapons ready, watch your ammo, and never forget to check your air filter.
