Marvel Snap Experiences US Outage Amid TikTok Ban; Developers Assure swift Restoration

Marvel Snap, the wildly popular collectible card game, recently faced an unexpected setback, leaving many U.S. fans dismayed. The game’s sudden unavailability in the United States is linked to the unforeseen consequences of the TikTok ban enforced under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA).

Those attempting to log into the game are met with a message explaining the situation: “Unfortunately, MARVEL SNAP is temporarily unavailable on U.S. stores and cannot be played in the U.S. This is due to TikTok’s recent takedown, which impacted the availability of MARVEL SNAP unexpectedly.”

Despite this hiccup, the team behind Marvel Snap, including developers Second Dinner and publishers Nuverse, assures players that they’re diligently working to restore access as soon as possible.

The root cause of this interruption lies in the ownership structure behind the game. ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, also owns Nuverse, the publisher of Marvel Snap. Given the sweeping ban on ByteDance’s apps, Marvel Snap was caught in the crossfire, although it shares no direct relation to TikTok. This connection might offer a potential loophole to resume the game’s service in the U.S.

Marvel Snap quickly captivated players upon its October 2022 release, with versions available for Windows PC, Android, and iOS. At launch, the game boasted over 170 Marvel characters and has continuously expanded its roster through weekly updates.

The gameplay, praised for its simplicity, involves players forming a deck of 12 cards, each featuring a Marvel character with distinct cost, power, and abilities. During play, participants lay cards down in one of three locations, each with unique effects, vying to achieve the highest power and claim victory in two out of three spots.

This straightforward yet engaging format has garnered a massive following, with Marvel Snap amassing over 22 million players and generating more than $200 million in revenue since its debut. Fans eagerly await its return, hopeful the game will overcome this temporary obstacle to continue its incredible journey.
