Celebrated anime director Mamoru Hosoda is set to captivate audiences once again with his latest venture, “Scarlet,” marking his return since the 2021 success of “Belle (The Dragon and the Freckled Princess).” The film will be brought to life by Studio Chizu, with Hosoda not only at the helm as director but also taking on the roles of scriptwriter and original creator, alongside producer Yuichiro Saito.
“Scarlet” is poised for a global release with TOHO responsible for its debut in Japan and Sony Pictures managing international distribution. This partnership signifies Sony’s vested interest in the project. Breaking from tradition, while Hosoda’s films have typically premiered in the summer, audiences can expect “Scarlet” to grace screens in winter 2025.
Though details about the film are currently under wraps, initial artwork teases the character of Scarlet—a formidable princess who defies the boundaries of time and space. Hosoda has hinted at grand themes, describing the film as exploring universal human experiences, potentially touching on themes of life and death.
Emphasizing a departure from his previous works, Hosoda conveyed that “Scarlet” blends elements of action and romance and is inspired by a classic story from world literature. His vision for the film also includes a groundbreaking visual style, aiming for an innovative aesthetic that deviates from both traditional 2D animation and the common CGI seen in Hollywood, promising viewers an extraordinary cinematic experience.
