LG Display Study Suggests 480Hz OLED Monitors Could Improve FPS Gaming Accuracy
LG Display has shared new findings from an experimental study exploring how monitor refresh rates can affect performance in fast-paced first-person shooter games. The research focused on whether higher refresh rates, especially on OLED displays, can help players react faster, track targets more easily, and land more accurate shots during competitive gameplay.
The study involved 31 adult male gamers who played an FPS title across four different refresh rate settings: 60Hz, 240Hz, 360Hz, and 480Hz. Each refresh rate was tested in random order to help reduce bias. Researchers measured performance using data such as hit score and event interval time, which refers to the time between a target appearing on screen and the player eliminating it. Players were also asked to give feedback on visual smoothness, target tracking, and overall gaming preference.
According to LG Display, the results showed a noticeable performance boost at higher refresh rates. The company reported that win rate improved by 38% when players used a 480Hz display compared with 60Hz. The biggest jump appeared between 60Hz and 240Hz, which is consistent with the common belief that moving beyond standard 60Hz can dramatically improve the gaming experience.
However, the study also suggests that improvements may continue beyond 240Hz. LG Display claims that switching from 240Hz to 480Hz delivered an additional 10% performance gain. If accurate, this would support the idea that ultra-high refresh rate gaming monitors can still offer competitive advantages, particularly in games where milliseconds matter.
LG Display attributes these improvements partly to the physical characteristics of OLED technology. OLED panels are known for extremely fast response times, strong motion clarity, and reduced blur compared with many traditional display types. The company says that a 480Hz OLED monitor can reduce input lag by more than 10 milliseconds compared with a 60Hz display. That lower delay may help players identify fast-moving targets sooner and respond with greater precision.
In practical terms, a higher refresh rate can make motion appear smoother and more immediate. In FPS games, this can help players follow enemies more naturally, adjust aim more accurately, and react more quickly when a target appears. For competitive gamers, even small improvements in tracking and reaction time can influence the outcome of a match.
Still, the results should be viewed with some caution. Because the study was sponsored by LG Display, it is reasonable to consider the possibility of marketing influence. Independent testing is important, especially when claims involve measurable gaming performance gains at the very high end of display technology.
There is also existing research suggesting that most of the real-world benefit may happen at lower refresh rate jumps. A separate 2026 study involving 101 FPS players compared 60Hz, 144Hz, and 360Hz displays. That research found that players were faster and more accurate at acquiring targets on 144Hz compared with 60Hz. However, it did not find a statistically significant performance difference between 144Hz and 360Hz.
That comparison raises an important question: do most players benefit meaningfully from refresh rates beyond 144Hz or 240Hz, or are the gains only noticeable for highly skilled competitive players? Another key difference is display technology. The separate study used LCD monitors, while LG Display’s claims focus on OLED panels. Since OLED screens typically deliver faster pixel response and cleaner motion, it remains possible that ultra-high refresh rates paired with OLED technology could produce different results.
For gamers shopping for a new monitor, the takeaway is clear but balanced. Upgrading from 60Hz to a higher refresh rate display can make a major difference in smoothness, responsiveness, and overall gameplay feel. Moving to 144Hz or 240Hz is likely to be one of the most noticeable upgrades for many players. Meanwhile, 360Hz and 480Hz OLED gaming monitors may appeal most to serious FPS players who want every possible competitive edge.
