LG Display has recently unveiled an innovative smartwatch display that features advanced 3D rendering capabilities through the integration of light field technology and OLED, specifically using OLEDoS (on Silicon). This display has the potential to revolutionize the user experience by offering holographic 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
At Display Week 2024, held in San Jose, attendees were able to witness the capabilities of this 1.3-inch display firsthand. LG Display has ingeniously combined a high-resolution 4K OLEDoS display with light field technology to create a holographic-like effect directly on the smartwatch. This technology creates a visual experience that is perceptible and impactful, yet not overwhelming.
During the event, the prototype was demonstrated under controlled conditions to prevent incorrect imagery due to the interference of multiple viewers. While in a normal use case, it is unlikely for many people to view a smartwatch screen at once, this setup ensured that the 3D effect was showcased optimally. The display was strategically bright, enhancing visibility even in darker environments, although it posed challenges when trying to capture the effect on camera due to its high brightness and the busy trade fair atmosphere.
Beyond the smartwatch display, LG Display is also pushing the boundaries in the AR/VR segment by developing micro OLED displays that boast impressive specs. These displays can reach an astonishing luminance of up to 10,000 candela per square meter and feature a pixel density of 4,000 PPI. The use of Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology enables these displays to efficiently capture and direct light to the user’s eye, minimizing scattering losses.
The integration of advanced display technologies in wearable devices heralds a new era of user interaction and immersion.
