Instead of simply capturing the eclipse as it appeared, some Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Xiaomi 17 devices reportedly activated the phone’s dedicated moon photography processing, producing images that looked artificially enhanced rather than natural.
The problem appears to be tied to “moon mode,” a feature found on several modern smartphones. This mode is designed to make moon shots look sharper and more detailed, especially when users zoom in from a distance. To achieve this, phones often rely heavily on AI image processing, scene recognition, and enhancement algorithms. In some cases, these systems may add texture, boost contrast, or reconstruct details to make the moon appear clearer.
That approach has already caused controversy in the smartphone industry. Samsung and Huawei have both faced criticism in the past over moon photography features, with users questioning whether the final image was a real photo or an AI-assisted recreation.
