Stormgate has officially launched on Steam, bringing a fresh wave of excitement to real-time strategy (RTS) enthusiasts. Developed by Frost Giant Studios, which boasts former Blizzard talent, this new free-to-play game revives the classic RTS magic while adding modern twists for today’s gamers.
In the world of RTS, games like StarCraft II, Warcraft III, and Age of Empires IV have long set the standard. They involve building bases, gathering resources, and commanding armies, all requiring quick thinking and swift actions. However, new additions to this beloved genre have been sparse—until now.
Stormgate immerses players in a sci-fi future where Earth is under siege from interdimensional foes. Players can choose from three factions: the human Vanguard, the Infernal Host, or the Celestial Armada. The game preserves the traditional elements that RTS veterans love, including base-building and resource management, while introducing innovative features like advanced production controls and streamlined army commands.
The game’s development journey began in June 2022, with its closed beta launching in December 2023. After early access in July 2024, it finally reached its official release on August 5, 2025, featuring “Campaign One – Ashes of Earth,” a 12-mission saga for the Vanguard faction.
For those who have enjoyed titles like Company of Heroes or Supreme Commander, Stormgate respects RTS traditions but also aims to modernize the experience. Its “Ashes of Earth” campaign delivers both single-player and co-op challenges, with the heart of the game in competitive ranked matches and custom games.
The release comes with various features, including a detailed mission campaign, 1v1 multiplayer, co-op modes, and a map editor. Although previous concerns about story depth and campaign length were addressed before launch, some players remain cautious about the monetization strategy, which includes free core gameplay but offers paid optional content like cosmetics and hero characters. Nonetheless, developers assure regular updates and patch notes to enhance user experience.
While Stormgate is available on Steam, it’s worth noting that if you’re planning to play on a Steam Deck, you’ll need an external mouse and ideally a keyboard for optimal play.
This launch signifies an exciting revival for the RTS genre, blending nostalgia with innovation, and promises to engage both longtime fans and new players alike.
