iPhones to Lose Truecaller’s Call-Recording Option After September 30

Truecaller has decided to discontinue its call-recording feature on iOS, a move that comes just over two years after its initial launch. The Swedish tech firm is refocusing its efforts on combating spam calls, which is its main area of expertise. As of September 30, the call-recording function will no longer be available for iPhone users.

For those who have existing recordings, Truecaller recommends downloading them directly to their devices or sharing them through email or messaging apps. Alternatively, users can store them in iCloud to ensure they remain accessible even after the feature is phased out.

The head of iOS at Truecaller explained that this decision allows the company to better concentrate on enhancing its Live Caller ID and automatic spam-blocking capabilities. The call-recording function, initially launched for subscribers on iOS alongside its comeback on Android, also introduced call transcription, particularly targeting the Indian market.

Recording calls on Android is relatively straightforward, but Apple’s ecosystem presents challenges. iOS doesn’t permit third-party apps to record calls natively, forcing Truecaller to work around this by using a merge line, which adds to both expenses and complexity. These issues contributed to the decision to end the feature.

A support page has been set up to assist users during this transition.

This change follows Apple’s rollout of native call recording and transcription in a recent iOS update. Unlike Truecaller, Apple’s native feature doesn’t require connecting to a record line and includes AI-driven transcriptions, offering a smoother user experience.

Originally, Truecaller introduced the recording feature to encourage iPhone users to upgrade, as many popular features are restricted on the free version. Premium subscribers benefit from real-time caller ID, advanced spam blocking, Siri shortcuts, and more.

Despite having about 3 million subscribers globally, iOS users generate 44% of Truecaller’s premium revenue, highlighting the importance of this segment to the company.
