iPhone 16e: Apple’s Low-Cost Model Achieves New Milestone with 40% In-House Parts and Cost-Saving C1 5G Modem

At $599 for the base model, labeling the iPhone 16e as Apple’s budget-friendly option might seem a stretch. However, the company has taken significant steps to cut down its reliance on third-party suppliers like Qualcomm to gain stronger control over hardware and lower material costs. The iPhone 16e, compared to its predecessors like the 2022 iPhone SE and iPhone 16, showcases the highest percentage of components crafted in-house. This strategic move enables Apple to save about $10 per unit, thanks to its custom C1 5G modem, which might appear modest at first glance, but there’s more to unpack here.

With its C1 5G modem, the iPhone 16e could save Apple up to $220 million, provided it meets its shipping goals. While it doesn’t support mmWave networks, this modem impressively outperforms Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X71, found in the iPhone 16 family, by 40% in certain conditions. It’s manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process for enhanced efficiency, with the transceiver on the older 7nm technology.
