Users of the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have reported that their devices run noticeably warmer than previous models. Despite initial concerns, it appears that Apple considers this temperature increase to be normal and within operational parameters. When queried about this issue, service technicians have reportedly been instructed to consider the warmth experienced by these devices as “expected behavior.”
Investigations into the warmth of the Pro models have brought to light the fact that the iPhone 15 Pro, in comparison to other phones such as the iPhone 13 Pro and competitors like the Galaxy S24 Ultra, does indeed exhibit elevated temperatures, even when the device is idle. At room temperature, the iPhone 15 Pro’s surface temperature was recorded to be higher than its counterparts. Interestingly, the Galaxy S24 Ultra also incorporates titanium, known for its lower heat conductivity compared to steel, but alleviates potential overheating with a significantly enlarged vapor chamber.
Apple acknowledged that at the initial release, a software bug in iOS 17, along with certain third-party apps, was partially responsible for overheating issues. Although subsequent updates such as iOS 17.3 have mitigated the problem to an extent, the warmth issue persists to a lesser degree.
Regarding future solutions, there have been discussions about Apple exploring new cooling technologies, including the potential use of graphene. Studies have demonstrated graphene’s superior thermal conductivity when compared to conventional solutions, suggesting it could efficiently channel heat away from critical components such as the processor. This material, if employed, could provide enhanced cooling without adding bulk to the device. Additionally, Apple is considering a steel casing for the battery of upcoming models, which could further assist in heat dissipation.
The introduction of these new technologies may be reserved for future models, such as the rumored iPhone 16 Pro, indicating that current iPhone 15 Pro users will not benefit from these potential improvements. The continuous search for better cooling solutions indicates that Apple is actively seeking to optimize performance and comfort for users in upcoming iterations of the iPhone Pro series.
Such advancements would be an important step forward, especially in light of lingering thermal issues that have affected not only the iPhone 15 Pro but also the previous iPhone 14 Pro series, particularly under heavy usage scenarios like gaming.
