The gaming world has just got a nostalgic twist with the introduction of Sugar Cubes’ N97 Elite handheld. This innovative gaming device pays homage to the iconic design of the Nokia N97, a beloved sliding phone from the past. While the concept of sliding handhelds isn’t new, the N97 Elite evokes fond memories with its unique design inspiration.
Sugar Cubes’ latest release reimagines the classic Nokia N97, transforming it into a modern gaming companion. However, the powerhouse inside, the Snapdragon 855+ processor, is a few years old. Originally a top-tier chip back in 2019, it may not boast cutting-edge performance today, but it’s more than capable of running most gaming emulators efficiently.
Under the hood, the N97 Elite is equipped with 12GB of RAM and offers a generous 512GB of storage. The device flaunts a 4.7-inch display that can slide upward and tilt, ensuring gamers enjoy an optimal viewing angle. Once you slide the screen, you’ll discover the game controllers waiting for action, replacing the N97’s traditional keyboard. Though it features a D-pad, the absence of analog sticks is a conscious design choice, likely due to the device’s compact dimensions.
Since late last year, enthusiasts in China have been treated to teasers of the N97 Elite on social media, and it’s now available for purchase in the country. As for a worldwide release, there’s no confirmation yet, but gamers and nostalgia buffs hoping to get their hands on this device should be ready to spend around CNY 1,499, approximately $205.
The N97 Elite captures a blend of old and new, appealing to both tech nostalgics and modern gamers, making it an intriguing addition to the world of handheld gaming.
