Introducing Numemory’s 128 GB Storage-Class Memory Chip: The Successor to Intel Optane

The tech world has been abuzz with the latest advancement from Chinese startup Numemory, which has unveiled a new storage-class memory chip called the NM102. This innovative chip, offering impressive capabilities reminiscent of the now-discontinued Intel Optane, is setting a new standard in the memory chip sector.

The NM102 chip is the latest addition to Numemory’s lineup, doubling the storage capacity of its predecessor. At an impressive 128 gigabits (16 GB) per chip, the NM102 represents a significant leap from the first-generation NM101, which was released in September 2023 with a capacity of 64 Gb.

Numemory, officially known as Xincun Technology and headquartered in Wuhan, aimed to bridge the gap between high-speed DRAM and the cost-effectiveness of NAND flash storage. The NM102 chip maintains compatibility with the 3200 MT/s NAND interface and utilizes a 1.2V I/O voltage. What really sets this chip apart is its ability to deliver DRAM-like performance, achieving response times in the microsecond range. To put this into perspective, conventional 3D TLC NAND chips typically deliver read times around 80 microseconds, with write operations taking even longer.

Potential applications for these chips primarily focus on being integrated into solid-state drives. However, their relatively small capacity per chip might pose a challenge for mainstream adoption, as several chips would be required to hit competitive capacities in standard SSD form factors.

Established in July 2022, Numemory has quickly grown to employ around 220 individuals, with a strong emphasis on research and development, comprising about 80% of their workforce. Although the company has been somewhat tight-lipped about the intricate details of their chip production, this development underscores China’s ongoing efforts towards achieving semiconductor independence, especially crucial with the absence of comparable technologies like Intel’s Optane.

Numemory’s foray into the memory chip landscape is a critical stride in the tech industry, highlighting the blend of cutting-edge innovation alongside strategic national developments in technology.
