Huawei’s Kirin 9100 to Debut in Mate 70 Series with Price Rivaling Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The launch of Huawei’s highly anticipated Mate 70 series might be imminent, as speculation circulates that the company is accelerating its efforts to outfit this flagship lineup with the cutting-edge Kirin 9100 chipset. However, there’s a catch: Huawei may face a hefty production cost for this high-end silicon, as recent rumors suggest that the Kirin 9100 could be nearly as pricey as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Inside sources suggest that the Kirin 9100 is expected to fall within the $157-$185 price range per unit. This is closely aligned with estimations for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, pegged at around $200. In comparison, other upcoming processors like the Dimensity 9400 are estimated to cost about $155, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be around $190. This positions the Kirin 9100 as one of the costlier chips to produce, even rivaling MediaTek’s forthcoming flagship.

So, what’s driving these high production costs for the Kirin 9100? A significant factor is Huawei’s reliance on SMIC, China’s leading semiconductor manufacturer. While SMIC has made strides by developing 5nm technology, they are unable to use the latest EUV machines, depending instead on older DUV technology. This situation elevates production expenses and lengthens manufacturing times.

Due to U.S. trade restrictions, Huawei cannot access the advanced manufacturing capabilities of giants like TSMC or Samsung, forcing the Kirin 9100 to rely on SMIC’s available tech. Interestingly, the Kirin 9100 might not be Huawei’s maiden 5nm chip, as it potentially uses the refined ‘N+3’ node, an enhancement over its predecessor with greater density. Anticipation builds as the Kirin 9100 is expected to debut next month, promising to unveil the specifics of its technology soon. Stay tuned for more developments on this groundbreaking release!
