Huawei’s CloudMatrix 384 AI cluster is making waves among Chinese tech giants, signaling a shift in the competitive landscape with NVIDIA. This new development from Huawei, crafted entirely with in-house technology, challenges NVIDIA’s presence, especially in China.
Huawei has recently unveiled the CloudMatrix 384 AI cluster, and its impact is already notable. Reports indicate that ten major clients have adopted this AI server, representing a significant milestone in Huawei’s AI journey. Although specific companies remain unnamed, these are key players in the tech industry, highlighting the cluster’s growing influence.
The CloudMatrix 384 AI cluster stands out with its impressive specifications. It features 384 Ascend 910C chips in an “all-to-all topology” configuration, which allows it to rival NVIDIA’s powerful GB200 NVL72. This development underscores a growing independence in China’s tech sector, reducing reliance on foreign technology solutions.
The cluster delivers 300 PetaFLOPS of BF16 computing power, nearly doubling that of NVIDIA’s competing product. However, it comes with a trade-off: it requires 3.9 times more power, resulting in less favorable performance-per-watt figures. Despite this, its robust capabilities are hard to ignore.
The pricing for the CloudMatrix 384 is around $8 million, significantly higher than NVIDIA’s comparable systems. However, Huawei’s focus isn’t just on cost-efficiency; the real emphasis is on providing a domestically produced alternative that stands toe-to-toe with Western offerings. This approach showcases Huawei’s commitment to innovation and self-reliance in tech.
