HMD Slate Tab 5G Leak Teases a Bold Lumia-Surface Revival

HMD Slate Tab 5G leak hints at a colorful Android tablet inspired by classic Nokia Lumia design

HMD could be working on a new device aimed directly at fans who still remember Nokia’s bold, colorful hardware era. A fresh leak claims the company has been developing a 2-in-1 Android tablet called the HMD Slate Tab 5G, and early renders suggest it may blend modern tablet functionality with a strong dose of Lumia nostalgia.

According to the leaked images, the HMD Slate Tab 5G appears in two bright color options that closely resemble the vibrant polycarbonate style once associated with Nokia’s most memorable devices. Instead of the plain black and gray finishes common in today’s tablet market, this model seems designed to stand out.

The front of the tablet is said to feature a large 15.6-inch 2K LCD display, making it a sizable device likely aimed at productivity, entertainment, and multitasking. On the rear, the renders show a single camera and an HMD logo. Along the bottom edge, there appear to be expansion contacts, which are likely intended for a detachable keyboard or docking accessory.

That detail is important because it supports the idea that the Slate Tab 5G is not just a regular Android tablet. It may be positioned as a 2-in-1 device, allowing users to switch between tablet use and a laptop-like setup for typing, work, or study.

The design seems to borrow ideas from two well-known device families. The detachable keyboard and productivity-focused form factor bring to mind popular convertible tablets, while the colorful body appears to pay tribute to the Nokia Lumia 2520. That Windows RT tablet is still remembered for its glossy finish, eye-catching colors, and distinctive design language.

Since HMD holds the license to produce Nokia-branded phones and has often leaned into the brand’s legacy, a Lumia-inspired tablet would not be too surprising. Earlier rumors about a Slate Tab device also suggested a front design similar to the Lumia 2520, which makes this new leak feel like a continuation of an idea that has been around for some time.

For now, detailed specifications for the HMD Slate Tab 5G remain unclear. The name suggests 5G connectivity, but details such as the processor, RAM, storage, camera hardware, battery size, and charging speeds have not been confirmed. Given the large 15.6-inch display, HMD could be targeting users who want a big-screen Android tablet for streaming, video calls, document editing, browsing, and light productivity.

There is also speculation that the Slate Tab 5G could arrive alongside another rumored HMD device, the Skyline 2 smartphone. While the tablet’s hardware remains a mystery, the Skyline 2 has been linked to more specific specifications.

The rumored Skyline 2 is expected to feature a 6.55-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a 144 Hz refresh rate and up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness. Camera hardware could include a 108 MP main sensor, a 50 MP telephoto camera, a 50 MP ultrawide camera, and a 50 MP front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.

Performance may come from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset, paired with either 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The phone is also rumored to include a 5,000 mAh battery with 40 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging. Other expected features include dual speakers and an IP54 rating for basic dust and splash resistance.

If HMD uses similar hardware thinking for the Slate Tab 5G, the tablet could end up as a mid-range Android productivity device rather than a flagship competitor. That could make sense for users who want a large display, 5G support, keyboard accessory compatibility, and a distinctive design without paying premium tablet prices.

Still, nothing is official yet. HMD’s upcoming product plans have been difficult to pin down, with some reports suggesting certain devices were cancelled before later leaks claimed they were still on the way. Because of that, the HMD Slate Tab 5G should be treated as an unconfirmed product for now.

If it does launch, the Slate Tab 5G could be one of HMD’s most interesting devices in years. A large 2-in-1 Android tablet with 5G, keyboard support, and a design inspired by Nokia’s colorful Lumia past could attract both productivity users and long-time Nokia fans looking for something different from today’s mostly understated tablet designs.
