Google Shifts Focus from Fitbit Smartwatches to Pixel Watch

In a strategic shift, Google has confirmed that it is steering away from introducing new smartwatch models under the Fitbit brand. This decision is in line with some of the experiences shared by Fitbit users, who have observed a decline in the overall quality of the Fitbit user experience. Points of contention include the retirement of the Fitbit web dashboard and an app redesign that did not meet customer expectations.

Sandeep Waraich, Product Management Director for Google Pixel Watch and Fitbit Trackers, shared in an interview that Google’s main focus regarding smartwatches is now on the new Pixel Watch. Waraich highlighted that the direction taken with Pixel Watches aims to fulfill user desire for devices that are not only discreet but also prioritize a less complex feature set alongside extended battery longevity.

According to the information shared, Google appears to remain invested in the development of wearable technology under the Fitbit name. However, these products are likely to be simpler tracking devices, such as the current Inspire 3. Existing models like the Sense 2 and Versa 4 are still on the market for consumers interested in purchasing them, and the future of the recently introduced Fitbit Ace LTE tailored for children is also being watched with interest. Whether these devices will continue to be supported and receive updates in the long term is a question that has been left open for now.

This transition points towards a more streamlined approach by Google in the wearable tech space, focusing on the integration of Fitbit’s health and fitness features into the Pixel Watch ecosystem, rather than maintaining separate smartwatch lines. For users and enthusiasts of wearable tech, it will be interesting to see how the market responds to this consolidation and what innovations the Pixel Watch will bring to the table.
