Recent backlash has put Google’s Gemini chatbot under scrutiny for its image generation feature which has been producing ethnically diverse images, even under prompts where it may not be contextually appropriate. Gemini, which is Google’s AI-based chatbot and the next step in the evolution of their Google Assistant, aims to contest with similar AI systems like ChatGPT. The integration of an image generator into Gemini has been a part of Google’s efforts to enhance the chatbot’s capabilities.
The controversy sparked when Gemini was asked to generate images for historically specific prompts, such as images of a Nazi soldier from World War II, and produced ethnically diverse results which were deemed historically inaccurate. The expectation in such scenarios would be a representation predominantly featuring white individuals in line with the historical context.
In response to the disapproval, Google made an official acknowledgement to address the concerns raised. The company expressed an understanding of the issue and committed to promptly improving the AI’s capability of depicting images more accurately in context to the given prompts. While recognizing the benefits of generating diverse images, Google admitted that the chatbot’s image generator currently does not meet the mark when context is considered.
