Google is set to roll out an automatic and mandatory software update for Pixel 6a devices starting July 8. This update aims to address battery overheating issues that have been causing some units to catch fire. However, it may significantly reduce battery life and charging speeds for certain users. The update will only impact those who have completed at least 400 full charging cycles on their Pixel 6a.
Interestingly, not all devices are affected, suggesting that the problem lies with batteries from specific manufacturers. For those impacted, Google is offering a generous compensation package. Users can have their battery replaced for free beginning July 21. Additionally, Google offers two compensation options: a $150 gift card to the Google Store or a $100 cash payout. Currency conversions will be based on the latest exchange rates.
If you’re unsure whether your device qualifies for compensation, there’s an online tool available to check. It’s important to note that the gift card cannot be combined with other promotions, which might make the cash option more appealing, especially since Pixel smartphones are often more affordable at other retailers.
Keep an eye out for this update, and make sure to explore your options if your device is affected.
