Google’s latest report from its Threat Analysis Group (TAG) reveals the removal of over 10,900 YouTube channels from April to June 2025 due to coordinated influence campaigns. Astonishingly, more than two-thirds—about 7,700 channels—were linked to networks affiliated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC). These groups were actively promoting Beijing’s policies, lauding President Xi Jinping, and criticizing the Philippines and U.S. foreign policies, using content in both English and Chinese.
This action highlights the ongoing issue of large-scale, low-engagement channels circulating short video clips to disseminate partisan viewpoints across the platform.
In addition to the China-linked removals, over 2,000 channels associated with Russian operations were eliminated. These networks produced content in multiple languages to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine while criticizing NATO and Western nations. In May, a subset tied to the state broadcaster RT saw the removal of 20 channels, four Ads accounts, and a Blogger site.
Monthly data underscores the magnitude of these efforts. For PRC-aligned networks, April saw 1,545 channels removed, followed by 3,592 in May and 2,598 in June. Russian-linked channels experienced similar scrutiny, losing 1,045 channels in April, 507 in May, and 392 in June, along with several blocked domains.
Additionally, TAG identified smaller campaigns in support of Iran, Azerbaijan, Israel, Romania, Ghana, and Turkey’s Victory Party. While less numerous, these operations employed similar multilingual strategies to bypass automated defenses.
Despite challenges, including advertising bans and hefty fines in Russia for not reinstating sanctioned outlets, Google remains committed to robust security measures. The company continues to employ a “defense-in-depth” strategy, combining account disruption with advanced machine-learning detection, to thwart state-backed influence campaigns.
