GOG’s Witty Reply to Steam’s New Licensing Disclaimer

Steam has emerged as the leading PC game store for a multitude of reasons, yet it faces ongoing debate regarding game licensing, especially among veteran gamers who reminisce about the days of outright ownership of their digital purchases. The spotlight on this issue has intensified due to a new California law demanding clarity in digital licensing practices. In response, Steam has introduced a disclaimer to their store cart clarifying that “A purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam,” directing users to the Steam Subscriber Agreement for further details.

In an amusing twist, Good Old Games (GOG), a platform reputed for its opposition to game licensing, humorously addressed Steam’s transparency move. GOG took to social media with a clever post highlighting their own policy: “A purchase of a digital product on GOG grants you its Offline Installers, which cannot be taken away from you.” This cheeky retort underscores a broader discussion about game distribution under licensing models.

Licensing raises pertinent concerns, chief among them being the longevity of one’s game collection. The question arises: what occurs to these digital libraries if Steam or any relevant game servers were to shut down? This apprehension hit home earlier this year when Ubisoft’s The Crew vanished from both its online store and users’ libraries, provoking outrage and uncertainty among gamers.

Another complicated issue is digital inheritance. Currently, there is no established method for transferring digital game libraries to family or friends after a gamer’s passing. However, there is potential movement on the horizon as reports suggest that the European Union is considering legislation to allow for the digital inheritance of games.
