A GeForce RTX 3070 owner says a factory assembly mistake may have caused his graphics card to run hotter than it should for nearly five years, eventually leading to instability, black screens, and unusual fan behavior.
According to a Reddit user known as u/buczi94, his GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 Gaming OC rev 2.0 LHR began showing serious problems after years of use. The card would randomly fail, produce black screens, and send its fans spinning up to around 3,500 RPM without warning. Even after setting a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner, the issue continued, leaving the owner searching for the real cause.
After multiple troubleshooting attempts failed, the user decided to open the graphics card for the first time since buying it. What he found was surprising: the protective plastic film was still attached to the VRM thermal pads.
Thermal pads are designed to transfer heat away from key components, including the voltage regulation modules, or VRMs. These parts help control power delivery to the GPU and can become extremely hot under load. If a protective film is left on the thermal pads, it can block proper heat transfer, preventing the cooling system from doing its job.
In this case, the plastic layer reportedly stopped the VRM thermal pads from making proper contact with the components. As a result, the GPU may have been operating under higher-than-normal temperatures for years. The user believes this caused long-term thermal degradation and may have shortened the life of the graphics card.
Once the protective film was removed and fresh thermal paste was applied, the RTX 3070 reportedly showed major thermal improvements. Stress testing after the repair suggested that the leftover plastic film was likely responsible for the card’s strange fan spikes and instability.
The case has raised concerns among PC hardware enthusiasts because this kind of issue should normally be caught during factory assembly and quality control. Protective films are meant to be removed before the cooler is installed. If left in place, they can create exactly the kind of cooling problem described by the user.
The owner contacted GIGABYTE after discovering the issue, arguing that the card had been assembled incorrectly from the beginning. However, because the GPU was already outside its warranty period, the company reportedly declined to offer a replacement or meaningful resolution. The user said the replies he received felt generic and did not properly address the fact that the protective film appeared to have been present since day one.
While this appears to be an isolated report, it serves as a reminder for PC builders and GPU owners. If a graphics card starts showing unexplained thermal problems, sudden fan ramping, black screens, or instability, the issue may not always be software-related. In some cases, poor thermal contact, aging thermal paste, degraded thermal pads, or even an assembly error could be to blame.
Opening a GPU can void warranties or risk damage if done incorrectly, so users should be careful before disassembling expensive hardware. Still, for older cards already outside warranty, inspecting the cooler, thermal paste, and thermal pads may help diagnose problems that software tools alone cannot reveal.
The reported RTX 3070 case highlights how a small manufacturing oversight can potentially affect a graphics card for years. A thin piece of protective film may seem minor, but when it blocks heat transfer from critical power components, the long-term impact can be significant.
