Imitation, they say, is the sincerest form of flattery, and Google appears to wholeheartedly agree. The tech giant has unleashed a new feature, dubbed ‘Canvas,’ for its AI-driven Gemini chatbot. This enhancement feels like a nod to existing tools like OpenAI’s Canvas for ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Artifacts, by creating an interactive platform designed for drafting, editing, and sharing both writing and coding projects.
“Canvas is designed for seamless collaboration with Gemini,” stated Dave Citron, the product director for Gemini, in a recent blog post. “These new features make Gemini an even more efficient partner, helping bring your creative visions to life.” This new addition aims to transform AI chatbots into productivity powerhouses, offering greater precision through a dynamic workspace rather than relying purely on text prompts. It provides a way to view code in action and refine drafts in a visually engaging manner.
Users can access Gemini Canvas via the prompt bar on both web and mobile interfaces of the Gemini app. This tool offers the capability to draft extensive messages which can then be meticulously edited. Canvas enables users to revise specific text sections for tone, length, and formatting, effortlessly. For instance, you might highlight a paragraph and prompt Gemini to make it more succinct, professional, or relaxed. There’s also an easy way to collaborate—simply export your project to Google Docs with the click of a button.
For tech enthusiasts, Canvas also brings a suite of programming capabilities to the table. Users can generate and preview HTML, React code, or web app prototypes. As you make tweaks or ask for changes, Canvas dynamically updates the preview. Imagine you’re building an email subscription form for your site—you can ask Gemini to whip up the HTML, then see it in action as it would appear in your web application.
But there’s more. Complementing Canvas, Google has added the Audio Overview feature from its NotebookLM to Gemini. Known for its podcast-like audio summaries that have previously ignited interest, Audio Overview can convert documents or webpages into audio formats with striking realism. This feature supports a variety of file types, letting users upload documents via the prompt bar to initiate an Audio Overview. Once the summary is crafted, it can be easily shared through the Gemini app on both web and mobile devices.
As of Tuesday, both Canvas and Audio Overview are freely accessible to Gemini users across the globe. However, the code preview feature in Canvas is only available on the web, and English remains the sole language for Audio Overview summaries. These latest innovations from Google signify a stride towards making AI tools more collaborative, intuitive, and versatile for users everywhere.
