Fujifilm Takes on Scalpers with Verification for X100VI Limited Edition Pre-Orders

The Fujifilm X100VI camera has been a hot commodity since its launch, quickly selling out and becoming the target of scalpers who flip the sought-after camera for exorbitant prices on resale platforms. The launch of the Fujifilm X100VI Limited Edition was met with similar fervor, with only 1934 units produced in celebration of the brand’s 90th anniversary. The demand was so overwhelming that the camera sold out almost immediately in Europe, causing purchasing sites to crash due to the high traffic.

The U.S. took a different approach to mitigate scalping issues. Fujifilm USA implemented a manual verification process to ensure that each purchase was legitimate, restricting sales to one per person, email, and shipping address. This strategy also saw the company releasing merely 100 units of the limited edition camera per day, with the selling period ending on March 23.

Despite the increased measures, scalpers have managed to post a few of these cameras on online marketplaces, with asking prices ranging from $4,450 to an exorbitant $8,000 for the compact APS-C camera. While the number of listings seems relatively low, the potential for more to appear over time remains, particularly as Fujifilm recently completed selling a portion of its allocated units for the limited edition model.

These steps seem to have made a difference compared to the upon-release listings for the standard X100VI, suggesting that Fujifilm’s anti-scalping strategy has had some success. For camera enthusiasts who seek a quality compact camera without the inflated price tag, other Fujifilm options are available in the market, like the Fujifilm X-S20 and the Fujifilm X-T30 II, which offer excellent features at more accessible price points.

The trend of limited-edition tech products attracting resellers and scalpers has become increasingly common, pushing manufacturers to adopt stricter sale and verification processes. For buyers, it’s a delicate balance between acting fast to secure these exclusive items and being vigilant against overpriced resales. As the tech community continues to grapple with these challenges, it’s clear that brands like Fujifilm are stepping up to ensure that true fans have a fair chance to own a piece of their history.
